Why Merino Is the Perfect Spring Layer

Why Merino Is the Perfect Spring Layer

Spring weather in New Zealand is notoriously unpredictable. One minute you are heading out into a crisp coastal morning thinking you need a proper winter layer, and a few hours later the sun is shining and you are wondering why you wore so much. That is exactly why lightweight merino is an essential choice for spring dressing.

Rather than packing your woollens away as soon as winter ends, spring is the ideal time to start thinking about lighter, more flexible layers. Merino fibre is warm when you need it, breathable when things heat up, and easy to add or remove as the temperature shifts throughout the day. Spring is also a wonderful excuse to bring a little more colour into your daily wardrobe.

Think Layers, Not Seasons

One of the best things about a fine merino top is that it does not have to be a winter-only piece. A lightweight merino turtleneck or cardigan can work beautifully underneath a jacket in the morning, then become the layer you wear on its own once the day warms up. You can throw a coat or heavier jacket over the top when it is cold, and simply take it off later. It is this natural versatility that makes merino such a useful addition to a casual wardrobe. Instead of keeping clothes that belong strictly to one particular season, you can build outfits from flexible layers that work together throughout the entire year.

A colourful merino top can be especially useful when creating these transitional outfits. Rather than treating it as a basic underneath piece, let it become a focal part of your style. You can wear a bright merino turtleneck underneath denim, add it beneath a patterned jacket or cardigan, pair it with a colourful skirt and boots, or keep the rest of your outfit simple and let the merino provide that splash of colour.

Speaking of custom colour combinations, whatever palette you fancy, Bea can craft it as a bespoke piece in our studio. The possibilities are far more interesting than simply reaching for another black or neutral layer.

If your wardrobe tends towards jeans, simple skirts and casual black basics, a colourful merino layer can completely change the way those existing pieces look. This is one of our favourite ways to make an existing wardrobe feel fresh without buying a whole new outfit. Imagine your favourite pair of jeans with a bright pink merino turtleneck underneath a relaxed jacket, or a printed skirt with a contrasting colour peeking out from beneath a jacket. You can pair these knit tops effortlessly with handcrafted pieces from our upcycled jeans collection.

You do not need to be wearing head-to-toe colour to make an impact, as sometimes just one unexpected hue is enough to make an outfit feel more individual. That is particularly true with an upcycled piece. Because every item made in our Waiheke studio is created from existing garments and materials, there is already something uniquely distinct about it. Colour, texture, and small details become part of what makes each garment one of a kind. Learn more how we re-imagine pre-loved merino wool here.

Why I Keep Coming Back to Merino Wool

Merino is one of those natural fibres that makes sense practically as well as aesthetically. It is naturally breathable, comfortable against the skin and warm without feeling bulky, which makes it particularly well suited to those in-between days when the weather cannot decide what season it is. It is also a wonderful fabric to layer because you do not need lots of volume to stay warm. Furthermore, merino can be worn several times without needing a wash, saving water while protecting the natural structure of the fibre. Learn more about the benefits of merino wool here.

A fine merino turtleneck can slip comfortably underneath a jacket, shirt, cardigan or coat without making you feel like you are wearing half your wardrobe at once. Then when the afternoon warms up, it is easy to peel off the outer layers and carry on with your day. Even a merino poncho can easily adapt to become a scarf or serve as a cozy travel lap blanket when you are on the move. Good clothing should work with your life rather than make you work around it.

Making your layers part of your overall personal style is one of the easiest ways to have fun with your wardrobe. You can combine different colours, patterns and textures by letting a bright sleeve show underneath a jacket, wearing a colourful turtleneck with a patterned skirt, putting denim over merino, or mixing something feminine with something casual. You do not have to follow a particular set of rules – some of the best outfits happen when you ignore the rules a little.

That creative freedom is particularly true with circular fashion. The whole philosophy behind upcycling is about taking something that already exists and giving it another life, and there is something lovely about carrying that idea through to the way you dress.

Instead of constantly looking for something new, look at the pieces you already own and think about how you can combine them differently. A new layer can make an old favourite feel completely different, and if those clothes happen to be colourful, upcycled and a little bit unexpected, even better.
