Upcycled Merino Wool Collection

The Story of Upcycled Merino

Every piece in our merino collection represents a deliberate shift away from synthetic, fast-fashion alternatives toward true upcycled fashion. We source high-grade merino wool, reimagining reclaimed textiles into bespoke garments that honour the original fibre. By prioritising upcycled materials, we keep premium natural textiles in circulation.

Merino wool is renowned worldwide for its natural performance properties. It regulates body temperature, breathes effortlessly, and offers exceptional softness against the skin. Unlike synthetic fleece or polyester blends, pure merino is completely biodegradable and plastic-free. At Heke Design, we ensure that every seam, cut and finish reflects our commitment to anti-plastic craftsmanship.

Designed and Made on Waiheke Island

Our boutique studio on Waiheke Island serves as the creative foundation for every piece we make. Founded by designer Bea Lorimer, Heke Design focuses on slow, deliberate production methods. Because we work with upcycled textiles, no two merino pieces are identical. Each item carries subtle variations in colour, texture, and panel placement, offering you a genuinely unique garment.

Our design approach focuses on versatile, fluid silhouettes that transcend seasonal trends. Whether draped as a lightweight layer during coastal summers or worn as a warm foundation during winter months, our merino collection is crafted for year-round wearability.

Caring for Your Merino Garments

Merino wool is naturally stain-resistant and odour-resistant, meaning it requires far less washing than synthetic fabrics. Often, simply airing your garment outdoors in a sheltered spot will refresh the fibres. When washing is necessary, follow these steps to preserve the life of your garment:

  • Hand wash gently in cool water using an approved wool detergent.
  • Avoid rubbing, wringing, or soaking the fabric.
  • Gently squeeze out excess water by rolling the garment in a clean towel
  • Dry flat in the shade to maintain shape and prevent stretching.
  • Store folded in a cool, dry place rather than hanging to prevent shoulder distorting.

By caring for your merino thoughtfully, you extend the life of an already durable natural fibre, supporting a sustainable garment lifecycle for years to come.
